World Wresting Entertainment Hall of Famer Mae Young, a pioneer in the realm of women’s wrestling, is gravely ill and has been under hospice care for the past month, according to reports.

Wrestling columnist Mike Mooneyham, of the Charleston, S.C. Post and Courier, incorrectly reported Thursday that Young had died after being taken off life support, but later corrected his post. TMZ.com also reported the story.

Young’s career spanned some nine decades, from her first bout in 1939 to her success as a septuagenarian contender.

In 2000 – at the age of 77 – she was crowned “Miss Royal Rumble.” Eight years later, she made history as the third woman to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, and her accomplishments were later highlighted in the 2005 documentary, Lipstick and Dynamite.

Starting Thursday, wrestlers and fans took to Twitter to honor Young’s legacy.

“A true trailblazer in our industry,” Tweeted wrestling promoter Dixie Carter. “She paved the way for every woman in the pro wrestling business.”

TNA wrestler Samoa Joe also Tweeted his well-wishes: “May we all live as boldly as Mae Young, and at least be a quarter as tough.”
